These relationships aren’t meant to last, she says, but they’re learning experiences for those who have them. “A karmic relationship is one that’s filled with all-consuming passion but is extremely difficult to maintain,” explains Sanam Hafeez, PsyD, a neuropsychologist and faculty member at Columbia University. While the phrase “karmic relationship” isn’t a clinical term, the characteristics do resemble other, well-known relationships. Karmic relationships are filled with passion and pain, often at the same time. The relationship only lasts for a short period of time- Due to the insanely hot connection and energy, these relationships usually only last for a short period of time, but the intensity makes up for the duration.If you’ve ever experienced a bond that feels like a magnetic connection, but with a turbulent twist, you’re not alone.One side is always giving of themselves: their time, effort, and energy while the other always takes. It is one-sided- The energy balance isn’t equitable.It creates a vicious and damaging cycle that can be hard to break. They often have co-dependent tendencies- A co-dependent relationship is when one partner needs the other partner, who in turn, needs to be needed. ![]() No matter how many times you try to tell them, or explain why you have boundaries, they never listen and continue to disrespect them and you. They do not respect your boundaries- As their needs come first, they will often disregard your needs, limits, and boundaries.The connection is overwhelming and immediate- You can’t deny the attraction and even though you might be cautioning yourself to take things slowly, you just can’t.Sometimes we are the ones who need to learn the lessons, and other times we are there so that our partner learns them. “Karmic relationships teach you about the world and others, whereas your soulmates help you learn your self-worth,” she says. “People often confuse karmic partners with soulmates, and they aren’t the same,” says Hafeez. The Purpose of and How a Karmic Relationship Comes About The direction it will ultimately take is dependent on how we navigate the relationship and how soon we realize the type of relationship we are in. Although all relationships that we enter into teach us something about ourselves, the intensity of a karmic relationship can do as much harm as it does good.
